They were treated with the experimental medication ZMAPP in a health facility that is well staffed, well equipped and has all the much needed resources and competences needed to wage the way against Ebola.
They were air lifted with a sophisticated ambulance, complete with all needed equipment. Their treatment was rapid and complete.
The United States government did not make any noise or fuss about it. No conflicting reports were issued by government agencies or officials. The tools to wage infectious disease war abound in the land.
Upon their arrival, the citizens were reassured, the Public health system raised the awareness level. The citizens had a rest of mind because they have a system with the capacity to respond appropriately.
The sick volunteers were prayed for in places of worship yet no pastor or bishop claimed to posses the power to cure Ebola. No pastor, priest or bishop asked his members to attend ‘immunization service’ against Ebola. Nobody was deceived, nobody was given false hope.
In my own land, rumor mongering held sway, all kinds of treatment were rumored, lives were lost through deceit.
Government officials even issued conflicting reports largely fueled by politics and ego. Administrative bottle neck, politics and stupid pride led us astray into getting a pesticide instead of the efficacious experimental drug.
Quarantined patients escaped, patients were abandoned at isolation centers and doctors were sacked rather than being mobilized.
I got hazy and incomplete report about the sick. Persons that were hitherto boasted to have recovered and discharged eventually turned out to be morbidly sick and eventually died.
No photograph or video of the sick or recovered patients were shown or released. No treatment protocol was made public. Federal government denies of new cases while the Lagos state government insist on the emergence of new cases. Confusion and uncertainty abound.
The American volunteers have recovered. They have been discharged. The whole world saw them walk out of the clinic, issued statement, shook hands with friends and family, hugged loved ones and colleagues. Science has defeated Ebola.
There was no anointing oil or water. Pastors needed not to come around the hospital. Science has shown superiority over sorcery.
I initially had trust and confidence that our system will do me proud in this case, but I am beginning to doubt myself. There is inter agency friction instead of collaboration, lies instead of truth.
