The debate on Agriculture last week was on grass importation. Nothing wrong with that if you understand the objectives. But that’s not the issue.
Agriculture still remains the biggest contributor to GDP followed by Services. Food security should be a given with a country that has large arable land.
It hurts me deeply when I see farmers still using hoes and cutlass. It is back breaking work and hurts.
Now you do not need many to be in farming. You need a few and truth be told some subsidies to stimulate and incentivise agriculture.
Tomato paste import cost $40m last year. Tomato waste from lack of value addition was about $85m. Just one example.
What are the plans for Food sustainability? When is the land use act going to be repealed? What do we need to to become the hub that feed Africa? How do we stop the current imports that taste better, are cheaper than ours?
What is the integrated logistics program?
Agric Minister answers please?
